Notes |
- Isabella (aka Bell) was born on 03 March 1813 in Moor of Taradale, Ross-shire, Scotland. She married Colin Mckenzie on 28 March 1833 in Urray, Ross-shire.Another possible date is November 1st, 1841 but this would be several years after their first two children were born. Isabella was widowed and left with seven children. In 1861 the census describes her as 47 years of age and living in a croft with four children.Evan is working as a miller. Catherine( Kate) is at home, John and Murdoch are still at school. On the advice of her brother John, who was farming at Whangaehu, she emigrated to New Zealand with five of her offspring: Evan, Murdoch, John, Jessie, and Kate. The "SS Asterope" arrived at Port Nicholson (Wellington) on the 4th September 1865 after a 95 day sea voyage. The family then spent the next eight days walking the sixty miles over the Rimutuku Ranges to Masterton. At night they camped in the bush. What a relief it must have been for Isabella to be reunited with her brothers Alexander, John and Murdo. She had travelled half way round the world at the age of 52 to a strange new land and many young people relied on her alone for guidance and strength. Later, in 1871 ,her son Donald came to New Zealand having spent ten years in Australia. In 1880 another son Roderick followed the family to New Zealand. Before leaving Scotland he had been a sergeant of police police in Glasgow. The older boys began homesteading in Kopuaranga while Isabella settled in Kuripuni, Masterton. She died in 1904 at 89 years while holidaying with her daughter Kitty Chamberlain. [4]
