Notes: Parish Church of St Leonard (Anglican), Church Hill, Hythe, Kent is dedicated to St. Leonard, the patron Saint of Prisoners.
The original early Norman church was built about 1090, about 1175 considerable enlargements were made and further development in the 13th century, when the west tower was added, and the existing choir and sanctuary. The chancel floor was raised to build a vaulted passage underneath the sanctuary for church processions. This passageway was used for centuries as an ossuary or bone-house containing 2000 skulls and 8,000 thigh bones mainly arranged on shelves.
