302 Historical Information
On 3 September 1943 the Allies invaded the Italian mainland, the invasion coinciding with an armistice made with the Italians who then re-entered the war on the Allied side.
The Allied advance was stalled for two successive winters: in 1943 on the German defensive position known as the Gustav Line, stretching from the river Gargliano in the west to the Sangro in the east, and in 1944 on the Gothic Line in the northern Appenine mountains. At the beginning of April 1945, the Allies launched their final offensive against the German positions spread out in a line across Italy, south of Bologna. German resistance was by now beginning to disintegrate and the Allies were able to fan out rapidly across the Po valley.
Padua War Cemetery lies in the zone of the Allied breakthrough in the spring of 1945 when, despite some resistance, the town was captured by Indian troops.

323 Mount Magdala
The establishment of the Good Shepherd Convent at Mount Magdala, Christchurch, dates from the early 1880s. It was established to provide residential care for marginalised women and girls.

Mt Magdala was officially opened on 22 July 1888. At its peak in the 1930s Mt Magdala was a self-contained community housing almost 500 people. Many new buildings were added over the years: a substantial chapel in 1912, a new orphanage in 1934 and numerous extensions and additions to the main buildings including a villa for elderly residents. With a farm and orchard the community was largely self-sufficient, and many residents were employed in laundry, sewing and cooking activities.

Changing social patterns and needs, and the difficulties of maintaining a large institution with a diminishing group of Sisters, led the Good Shepherd Sisters to retire from Mt Magdala in 1967 after more than 80 years service in Christchurch.
Source - Aidanfield website - Aidanfield is located west of Halswell Road between Oaklands and Hillmorton, in what?s now become a prestigious suburb encompassing the beautiful grounds of the St John of God Hospital, St John of God Chapel, the Mt Magdala Historic Cemetery, and the headwaters of the Heathcote River.

In 1879 Mr. Gallon joined Mr. Udy, as Udy and Gallon, which partnership subsisted till 1893, when the latter became sole owner, Mr. Udy starting a mill in the Forty-Mile Bush. 343 Phyllis: Phyllis spent her primary school days at the Ohau school and then attended Palmerston North tech, mostly travelling to school each day by train. It was whilst at this school she really shone at embroidery. Many will recall some of the beautiful work she did.
Upon leaving school, work was cut out on the farm, in the house, looking after younger brother Keith and of course making sure brother Bill had a clean house. Phyllis and Gam (Kate Davies) used to render all the lard they cut from the pigs killed weekly, take it to town and sell it to Williams Tearooms. Her parents John and Kate Davies were dairy farmers so all the milk had to be hand separated.
Phyllis was good at tennis and played regularly.
Had a stroke about August 1994 which left her with retricted movement in her right arm - but could still live on her own for some time after that.

Phyllis wrote the following in Shirley Crothers (nee Davies) autograph book on 1 Sept 1951.
"Make new friends but keep the old.
One is silver the other gold.
New made friends like new made wine.
Age must mellow and refine.
Friendship that has stood the test.
You will find is ever best".

345 Police hunt hit and run killer
Kelly Makiha - Saturday, December 2, 2006 14:30
A Rotorua woman found dead on a highway was killed by a hit-and-run driver, police believe. Kerry Peka, a 34-year-old KFC worker, was found lying in the middle of the road by Te Puke people about 3am yesterday on State Highway 33 at Mourea, near the Happy Angler store.
Police believe she was hit by a vehicle, but are mystified as to who struck Ms Peka and what she was doing at Mourea. Her death is also a mystery to her workmates, who are stumped to know why she was so far away from her home in the early hours.
KFC Rotorua restaurant manager Pam Kippax said staff members were in tears yesterday when they got word from police. She said the news was so devastating the management team went home.Kerry had worked at KFC for eight months and was considered a valued employee."
Her life was going so well. She lived close to town and she loved coming to work. She was definitely part of the team. She is going to be missed by everyone, especially with the shifts she did at night, she was the backbone of the store."
Miss Kippax said Kerry had a daughter who was about 12, who lived with Kerry's parents in Tokoroa. She is understood to have a brother and sister who lived in Rotorua. She moved to Rotorua about eight months ago after living in Australia. The last shift she worked was on Wednesday and she was dropped home at the end of it.
Miss Kippax said she hoped whoever hit her would come forward as soon as possible to help ease the pain for her family and friends. "It's also hard not knowing why she was out there as well because she didn't have a vehicle."
Detective Sergeant George Staunton of the Rotorua police said there was a "strong possibility" she had been hit by a vehicle. He said police were still at a loss to know why she had been at Mourea so early in the morning. He said the police's serious crash unit was still carrying out a reconstruction of the scene as well as trying to piece together her movements.
Mr Staunton said police found some items at the scene that were relevant to what might have happened but he could not confirm what they were. He said an autopsy was to be carried on the woman's body in Auckland to determine how she died but it appeared it was from injuries after being hit by a car, including severe head injuries.
Late yesterday afternoon he told the Daily Post their inquiries were progressing well. Police were to speak to some people in relation to the incident but Mr Staunton was not able to give any more details. He said police would not be releasing any further information until today.

Driver not responsible for death
Kelly Makiha - Thursday, December 28, 2006 12:56
A teenager who ran over a Rotorua woman at Mourea nearly a month ago will be charged - but is not being held accountable for her death.
The 18-year-old was driving a car that hit 34-year-old Kerry Peka on State Highway 33 at Mourea about 3am on December 1.
Acting Senior Sergeant Deirdre Lack of the Rotorua police said although the woman died as a result of injuries after being hit by a car, the driver was not at fault.
She said Miss Peka's death would be referred to the coroner. However, the teenager allegedly failed to immediately report he had been involved in the crash and he would be summonsed to appear in the Rotorua District Court on a charge of failing to report an injury crash to police.
Originally Miss Peka's family and her colleagues at KFC in Rotorua were confused about why she had been at Mourea so early in the morning. However, police have now determined she had been drinking at a party there.
Miss Peka was the mother of an 11-year-old girl who lives with her grandparents at Tokoroa.
