    Left Glasgow on 28 July 1869 aboard the clipper ship 'James Nicol Fleming'. Arriving at Port Chalmers on Sunday 24 October 1869 
    • Joseph Duncan left Aberdeen with his family to come to New Zealand, for a three year engagement with the firm of Mortons, as the head of the tinsmithing and preserving departments at the Glasgow Meat Preserving Company's meat works at Woodlands in Southland NZ.
      Joseph, Mary Ann his wife, their children Elizabeth, Jean, William and James and Jane Cameron, Mary's half sister, left Glasgow on 28 July 1869 aboard the clipper ship 'James Nicol Fleming'. The 992 ton ship, with 160 passengers on board, made its maiden voyage to New Zealand in 88 days between ports, arriving at Port Chalmers on Sunday 24 October 1869.

      A description of the ship's journey is given in 'The Otago Daily Times' on Monday 25 October 1869. The paper?s shipping column also shows the ship's arrival with 14 cabin passengers and 146 in second cabin and steerage. In the imports column a large list of engineering and similar goods is shown arriving on the 'James Nicol Fleming' belonging to a William Moody. According to the book 'Early Woodlands', by Margaret Trotter, Mr W. Moodie was a representative of the Glasgow Meat Preserving Company.
