    Notes
    • Ken May notes:
Murdo arrived in New Zealand with the rest of his widowed mother?s family on September 4, 1865. He was just thirteen years old when the SS Asterope docked at Port Nicholson in the Wellington harbour.

Murdoch is regarded affectionately as the black sheep of the family. He was always off somewhere searching for a new adventure. He helped his brother Donald clear Myrtle farm. On many of his journeys Murdo was accompanied by elder brother John and together they spent several years travelling throughout New Zealand and Australia. There seems to be much speculation regarding how he made his living. While in Australia, it is rumored that he shot a native who was skinning cattle. The story goes that he was run out of the area by the Aboriginees.
The McKenzie brothers are known to have driven bullock wagons from Perth to Darwin and they also spent some time in the Australian outback prospecting for gold. After John returned to settle in the Wairarapa, Murdo spent the rest of his life in northern Australia and New Guinea. Rumour suggests he became quite a well-known pearler operating out of the Northern Territories and he is known to have travelled frequently between Darwin and New Guinea. Later it is believed he had a pearl fishing business in Northern Australia. There was an unconfirmed family rumor that he was involved in blackbirding, or taking unwilling natives from the islands to work plantations in Northern Australia. On his death certificate his occupation was miner. There was a spectacular gold nugget at Myrtle Farm that Murdoch was supposed to have given his sister-in-law Elsie. Alas, it was stolen by a hitch hiker when Alan Willoughby was managing the farm.
Murdo was living at Eventide House, Collaroy when he died. He is buried in section Z, plot 608, at the Manly Cemetery in Griffiths Street, Sydney. The grave plot was purchased by Isabella Munro who was his niece.
There is no record of Murdo ever being married. [4]
