Wellington Printer Dies
A printer in Newtown for 57 years, Mr Andrew Reed Hornblow died yesterday [that is, on 3 October 1961].
Mr Hornblow, 91 [born 3 March 1870], of Mein Street, Wellington South, exchanged letters and verse with world leaders. A few weeks before Sir Winston Churchill's 80th birthday he wrote to Sir Winston as an "older man to a younger a man" and included a birthday verse. Mr Hornblow received a personal letter of thanks from Sir Winston.
Just before the Royal Tour of New Zealand, Mr Hornblow wrote a loyal message to the Queen in verse form. Later he was informed that the Queen accepted the poem with "pleasure and appreciation".
Mr Hornblow was born in 1870 at Greytown. His parents arrived in Wellington in 1856. On leaving school, he joined the staff of the Wairarapa Standard, published in Greytown, as a reporter. In 1898, Mr Hornblow moved to Wellington and opened a printing works in Adelaide Road. A few years later, he moved the business to Riddiford Street where he was later joined in business by one of his sons, Mr Charles Hornblow. Mr Hornblow worked at the business until about five years ago [that is, until 1956].
Mr Hornblow was a member of the Oddfellows Lodge and had probably the longest term of membership of anyone in it. He belonged to the Greytown Lodge for 81 years ? he joined the Junior Lodge there at ten years of age.
He was a member of the original Wellington Zoological Society which controlled the present zoo in its early stages. He served many years on the Newtown School committee back to the days when it was a district high school.
As secretary of the Vogeltown and Mornington Municipal Electors' Association he helped get the first "portable" school in New Zealand, the Mornington School which was later removed to Happy Valley.
Mr Hornblow was a Justice of the Peace for more than 40 years and served on the council of the Justices Association.
He was a member of the Wellington Hospital Board for several years. Mr Hornblow was a scholar, teacher and later Sunday School superintendent at the original Methodist Church in the Wairarapa situated at Greytown.
He was a member and at times office bearer of Trinity Methodist Chruch, Wellington South, for more than 60 years.
After he shifted to Wellington, Mr Hornblow retained a close interest in the Wairarapa. He attended both the opening of the old railway line over the Rimutakas on October 12, 1878, and the new one through the tunnel on November 3, 1955.
As the oldest pupil at the Greytown School Centennial Celebrations three years ago [in 1958], he headed the procession through the town.
Mr Hornblow is survived by four sons, Alan, Charles, Maxwell and Edgar, and a daughter Mrs W.H. Saunders, of Masterton.
