They departed from Gravesend, England on the 13th December 1839 on the 'Coromandel'. Another passenger on board was Bennett Hook and her children, Rachael aged 12, Emily aged 8 and Friend aged 5. Stephen and Bennett's relationship bloomed on the voyage to New Zealand. The Coromandel arrived Wellington on 29 August 1840 and their daughter Sarah Annis, conceived on board, was born on the 15th October. Stephen and Bennett married in 1842 and had six more children.
