Notes |
- Douglas Robert Tankersley, Bob was born at Nurse Spellman's Nursing Home in Masterton on 2 August 1913 son of William and Lizzie (nee Chamberlain) Tankersley. The journey in from Mt Bruce by buggy and pair had been a long one and Bob was nearly born on the doorstep. Bob had a difficult time making it into the world, only 4 pounds in weight at birth he was always small but wiry. Bob attended school at Maraekakaho primary until Standard 6.
Bob started work at Roache's Store where, He drove trucks to Hastings everyday and experienced the Napier Earthquake in 1931, helping to clean up the mess in the store. He stayed there until, after older brother Tim took over "Glenside," the family farm, when Bob moved into Masterton with his mother.
It was more difficult to find work in Masterton particularly in the late 1930's. Finally found a gardening job with his cousin's husband, Bert Ball. Later moved to Robinson's Nursery in Ngamatawa Road. Then came the War, Bob enlisted as an Engineer. Tim and Bob both loved all things mechanical, cars, motor bikes and sundry otheritems were dismantled and restored, and Bob had done an Engineering course with ICS (International Correspondence Schools). Bob spent 4 years in Egypt advancing to Sergeant. Back to Masterton in 1945, once again no work.
Bob joined the Forest Service and was made foreman this involved a deal of travelling as the service used him in setting up new forestry operations. He rose to manager of Ngamu during this time he met Nan. The Forest Service wanted him to establish a new forest at Wairoa but Bob and Nan were engaged and Bob did not want to continue being moved around and so left the service and got a job in a local garage. Bob was married at to Nancy Ellen (Nan) Matthews. They built a house in Chamberlain Road Masterton where they lived until after Gavin was born.
They then moved to Nan's mother's property in Opaki and started a poultry business \endash Nan's father, Len, helped and lived with them. Nan's mother had died prior to them leaving Chamberlain Road. Their second child Gay was born during this time.
When the old Tankersley farm, "Forest Home[Built by Richard Theophylus Tankersley and eldest son Stephen with timber from McLeod/Wyeth Timber Mill where Steve worked.]," behind Miki Miki school came on the market they purchased it. Later they moved to Mount Bruce, when Gavin married they built another house on the property for him and his wife. It was here that Bob died on 12 June 1982. Nancy now lives in her own home on her sons property at the end of Rau??? Rd.
Thanks to Helen Tankersley for these notes.
