Franklin was named after Lady Franklin wife of Sir John Franklin born19 th October, 1901.
Lady Franklin's visit
The Question has often been asked :- how did Franklin receive its name ? One theory is that the means a freeholder whose title to his land was so absolute that he was free of all feudal service; another is that it was named after Sir John Franklin who lost his life in1847 after discovering the North West Passage round the top of America.
Evidence now shows that the latter to be partly correct for his wife, Lady Jane Franklin, also shares this honour. As far as is known, Sir John never visited here but his wife traveled in the area in the very early days of British Colonisation, even before the days of a newspaper in Auckland. She crossed the Manukau Harbour in a mission schooner and was carried by stalwart Maoris over rough narrow paths where few , if any, white women had been before. She visited Waiuku even before it was known by name to Europeans and passed by the sandy wastes of Maioro which are soon to be tapped for the new steel industry.
Lady Jane Franklin was a woman of exceptional talent and ability. As the daughter of a rich man, she had before her marriage traveled extensively through out Europe. When her husband, the well known Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin became Governor of Van Dieman's (Tasmania) in 1837, Lady Franklin was not content merely to sit at home and be hostess to her husband's friends and official acquaintances. As well as taking a great interest in the affairs of the Colony, in education and cultural matters, she also took an active part in several scientific expeditions. She was the first white woman to travel over land from Melbourne to Sydney.
In February, 1841, she left Hobart in the sloop of war, H.M.S. "Favourite" for New Zealand. After visiting Wellington and Akaroa, she came on to Auckland where Governor Hobson and his wife had only recently arrived from the Bay of Islands. Her suite consisted of her Lady in waiting, Miss Williamson, Lieutenant Bagot of the 51st Regiment and two servants.
On arrival at Auckland, Lady Franklin found Hobsons living in a small house while the prefabricated Government House was being erected. They were hardly in a position to entertain the wife of a brother Governor and were no doubt relieved when Lady Franklin accepted an invitation to attend a missionary meeting at Waikato Heads. To someone as widely traveled as Lady Franklin it may not have been such a very long journey, but nevertheless as her diary shows it was undertaken not without considerable personal discomfort. The fact that she attempted such a journey while recovering from a leg injury, caused earlier by a fall while visiting Akaroa, makes it all the more remarkable.
Franklin was born on 19th October, 1901 while the family lived in Otaua. He attended the Otaua School. When the family moved to Mangere Franklin, probably continued at the Onehunga School which he had been attending during the building of the Mangere home.
He next attended the Seddon Memorial Technical College in Wellesley St., Auckland.
On leaving Secondary School he served an apprenticeship as an electrician, first at the Devonport Power Station and later at Turnbull and Jones where the scope of the work was limited. After his apprenticeship was completed he worked mainly on the installation of lifts - mainly Waygood Otis. Alex Holmes was a good friend. When he was 23 he married Lily Amelia Canning, an English girl who was working as a dressmaker for a miss Dawson. They met at dancing classes and before long Franklin was a constant attendant of the sewing machines becoming almost an expert at maintaining them.
After their marriage they left on the "Niagra" for Vancouver. Here work was not easy to obtain so he worked at whatever he could get including roofing buildings. From Vancouver they moved to Toronto where he worked as an auto-electrician for a large bakery firm. When he left N.Z. his aim was to get experience in United States but due to tight immigration controls there were few vacancies for N.Z.'s. While living at Toronto the opportunity came to enter the United States.
They traveled to Chicago, their car heavily laden but appeared not to be very impressed and moved on to Cincinnati where he lived until his death in 1974. In Cincinnati he worked on refrigeration and air-conditioning and must have at one time considered returning to N.Z.. The inhalation of gas from this type of work led to his change of occupation. He worked for Baders Hardware firm taking a very active part in the running of the business. Shortly after moving from Silverton to 7222 Chetbert Drive, Lily passed away. He continued to live here alone for some years keeping in close touch with his daughter Lila and family. Allen lived at a considerable distance in Cody. He then married Lou. When he retired Lou and he took a trip to N.Z. He had previously come out to N.Z. on his own about 12 years before. Over the years he had corresponded with his family fairly regularly - the letters being eagerly read.
