DONALD JAMES DEMPSEY, 72 ROCKFORD - Donald James Dempsey, 72, of Rockford died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at home. Born Oct. 12, 1936, in Dixon, the son of Charles and Catherine (Murray) Dempsey. Don married Jo Ann "Carol" Booker of Rockford on Oct. 3, 1964. He graduated in 1955 from St. Thomas High School, where he was a star basketball player. After high school, Don served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, before joining the ranks of the Rockford Fire Department. A member of the Firefighters' Union, Don spent 35 years on the job, mostly as an engineer/driver before retiring in 1993. Don was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, firefighter and friend. Survivors include his wife, Carol of Rockford; daughter, Jill (Brian) Camling of Oregon; son, Jim of Chicago; granddaughter, Kelsie Camling; sister, Joan Carson of Boulder, Colo.; brothers, Patrick (Judy) of Rockford, Richard (Toni) of Rockford and Mark of Chicago; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert (Marilyn) and Russell "Russ"; sister, Shirley; and brother-in-law, Warren Carson. The family expresses special appreciation to Dr. Joseph Ross and nurse Karen as well as the staff of Heartland Hospice for their care of their father and husband. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, in Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory, Rockford Chapel, 4311 N. Mulford Road. Private burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Heartland Hospice of Rockford in Don's name.
