Notes: St. John’s Presbyterian was opened on 1st January 1865 at 44 Winchester Street, Lyttelton. The church was originally used for a dual purpose as the Lyttelton High School during the week and for worship at weekends. The Church was designed by Architect Samuel Farr and erected by local Lyttelton contractors out of locally quarried stone from Sumner Rd and Governors Bay quarries, (with imported slate for the roof). The church is a fine example of plain gothic design and testament to good craftsmanship. Brian Weybourne was a skilled stonemason.
The church of St. John shared in the ‘Dissenters’ cemetery on Reserve Terrace.
