Waihenga Cemetery

Notes:
From 1871 till 1947 the Cemetery was administered by the Presbyterian Church currently administered by the South Wairarapa District Council.
The Rev John Ross purchased 10 acres of the Wharekaka Plain from Mr Baird, the Provincial Engineer, the a 'glebe' (ecclesiastic land), an acre of which was to be used as a cemetery. The land cost £3.5s.0d per acre. The church records show that the first person to be buried at the Cemetery was 12 year old Brian Wilson who died as the result of an accident 10th October 1871.
During the 1940s fire swept through the cemetery destroying the wooden crosses. The last burial was James McMaster 22 June 1956.
The above write up and the following Cemetery Plan is from the noticeboard at the Cemetery and is sponsored by the Martinborough Community Board.
