Wairarapa Archives Undated letters from Margaret Morten of Derbyshire to her sister Jane Oates of Taratahi. Includes passengers contract ticket for Oates family from James Baines & Co of Liverpool for journey to New Zealand in 1856 on "Oliver Lang" Includes photograph of Jane Oates and her children, Richard, Samuel, Joseph, Hannah & Anne Elizabeth, taken before they left for New Zealand in 1856 Parent Record : Renall, Olive: Papers (00-97) Two books entitled "The Legend of Samuel Oates and the Verger" 1978-1988 and "The Story of Samuel Oates and the Verger" written by Frank Fyfe. They tell the story of Samuel Oates transporting gum trees for Charles Rooking Carter from Wellington to Wairarapa. The trees were carried in a wheelbarrow over the Rimutakas but unfortunately while Samuel was in the Rising Sun Hotel, Greytown, three of the trees were stolen. The gum tree outside St Luke's Church, Greytown is thought to be one of the trees that was stolen.
