Two books entitled "The Legend of Samuel Oates and the Verger" 1978-1988 and "The Story of Samuel Oates and the Verger" written by Frank Fyfe. They tell the story of Samuel Oates transporting gum trees for Charles Rooking Carter from Wellington to Wairarapa. The trees were carried in a wheelbarrow over the Rimutakas but unfortunately while Samuel was in the Rising Sun Hotel, Greytown, three of the trees were stolen. The gum tree outside St Luke's
Church, Greytown is thought to be one of the trees that was stolen.
