Proposal for Emeritus Professorship
Philip Dewe
The School of Business, Economics and Informatics would like to propose Professor Philip Dewe as
an emeritus professor. Prof. Dewe, who retired from the College in September 2015, has an
exceptional record of service to the College and to his academic discipline.
Prof. Dewe was an MSc student in Industrial Relations at the LSE and was a senior research officer in
the Work Research Unit set up to research the quality of working life 1976-1979. Prof. Dewe
returned to NZ in 1980 to be Head of the Human Resource Management Dept at Massey University
where he remained for the next 20 years. In that period he returned on sabbatical to the LSE in 1986
and to Birkbeck in 1996.
In 2000 Prof. Dewe was recruited back to Birkbeck by the then Head of the Dept of Organizational
Psychology, Professor David Guest. The aim was for the two of them to work together but Professor
Guest was recruited to Kings College London and Prof. Dewe was subsequently appointed Professor
and Head of the Dept of Organizational Psychology and of the School of Management and
Organizational Psychology in 2001.
Prof. Dewe was appointed Vice-Master of the College in 2003 and remained in this role until 2014.
On stepping down from this role he was PV-M Special Projects. He was made a Fellow of the College
in November 2014.
As the short attached CV demonstrates, Prof. Dewe has a distinguished record of research and
teaching in organisational psychology in addition to his record of leadership and management.
